HUMANIZED BIRTH (PARTO HUMANIZADO)
Humanized birth puts the woman in the center and in control, focuses on community based primary maternity care with midwives, nurses and doctors working together in harmony as equals, providing evidence based services.
Fish Can't See Water: The need to humanize birth
by Marsden Wagner, MD, MSPH

"Humanizing birth means understanding that the woman giving birth is a human being, not a machine and not just a container for making babies. Showing women---half of all people---that they are inferior and inadequate by taking away their power to give birth is a tragedy for all society. On the other hand, respecting the woman as an important and valuable human being and making certain that the woman's experience while giving birth is fulfilling and empowering is not just a nice extra, it is absolutely essential as it makes the woman strong and therefore makes society strong." -Marsden Wagner, MD

SAFETY OF HOMEBIRTH

Milbank Report: Evidence-Based Maternity Care
The most comprehensive study to date of how maternity care is delivered and financed highlights examples of how care provided to mothers exposes them to avoidable harm and expense.

"Childbearing women need to understand that maternity care that is routinely available often is not in the best interest of themselves and their babies. Pregnant women have the right and responsibility to become informed and make wise choices — for example, their choice of caregiver, birth setting and specific procedures, drugs and tests. Becoming informed and taking responsibility can be a big task — and can have very big pay-offs." Childbirth Connection

IS MY PELVIS TOO SMALL?/IS MY BABY TOO BIG?

Question CPD (Cephalo-Pelvic Disproportion)

Cephalo-Pelvic Disproportion (CPD)
CPD is the medical diagnosis used when a baby's head is said to be too big to fit through the mother's pelvis. ICAN's well researched article talks about pelvimetry, CPD myths, and provides suggestions to lower the risk for a CPD diagnosis.

BIRTH TRAUMA AND PTSD (POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER)

Study: Birth trauma lies in the eye of the beholder.

RESULTS: Four themes emerged that described the essence of women's experiences of birth trauma: To care for me: Was that too much to ask? To communicate with me: Why was this neglected? To provide safe care: You betrayed my trust and I felt powerless, and the end justifies the means: At whose expense? At what price? CONCLUSIONS: Birth trauma lies in the eye of the beholder. Mothers perceived that their traumatic births often were viewed as routine by clinicians.
